Had a mid-winter hike in the middle of the hottest summer ever. Felt pretty darned good! On the way up the Hardy Ridge loop, we encountered a Pacific Giant Salamander - a first for both of us. Very cool creature! The trail up from the junction was as brushy as ever, and clouds sweeping over us insured it was dripping wet. By the time we reached Phlox Point, ...

Not much of a hike, but berries were really good there. Blackberries (the sweetest I remember) and the first of red huckleberries.

We had intended on going to a different TH but it turns out that road had been reclaimed! This is a wonderful loop trail and we explored a bit near the Fall Creek TH and found another TH. We had originally wanted to park at the Fall Creek TH but the road south of there no longer exists. You mus reach this Large parking lot from the north by way of Capitol Pe...

What a great hike to do on a cloudy day. Never been up here before and we enjoyed it quite a bit. Want to go back when it's clearer out and explore some more of the area. Pictures to come...

We hiked to Laverty and Chimney Lakes from the Bowman Trailhead. We did not get an early start due to our hiking activities from the prior day. Our intent was to go further along the trail to Hobo Lake, but dark clouds moved in. The ridge up to Hobo Lake did not have tree cover and Hobo Lake itself is pretty exposed, so we decided not to risk getting caught ...

This was looking to be at at least a cool cloudy day, but turned out much worse. We had left behind our rain pants, but always have rain jackets. It was raining fairly hard for the first half of the hike, and the feeling of being back in a normal Pacific Northwest felt good. It seemed warm enough at the TH but got more windy and colder at the top of this rid...

Had permits to climb this past Saturday. Go figure no measurable rain in two months until the day of my permit. Made to end of treeline and it was too wet, cold, and windy. Several other climbers called it quit this day. Miserable day to attempt it.

We've been to the Wallowas a few times, but never made it up to the popular Lakes Basin area. We knew we were going to have good weather on Friday, but the rest of the weekend looked doubtful. So, to get some bang for our buck, we did what may be unthinkable sacrilege to many - we day hiked the Lakes Basin area. We sure were hoping that our maps and Sullivan...

Took this Friday off and was hiking solo. Just felt like hiking the PCT and perhaps meeting up with some through hikers! Didn't see any hikers until the last hour of the hike. Then I met the following PCT through hikers: Hooker, Non-zero, Half-Fast and Turtle! I gave them each a pack of Oreo Cookies and had some great conversations. A beautiful day that ende...

Awesome loop through a beautiful forest, past glorious opal blue streams, with a payout of 7- or 8-volcano view, lots of history, and incredible old growth. All spent with a great new trail friend. We took the loop clockwise, climbing up to Whetstone Mountain first. It was a gentle approach, similar to many in the gorge. The views on top were pretty darn nic...

I bought the permits in February. My 16 yo niece from Brooklyn NY decided to visit us for a few weeks this summer, so I invited her to join us on the climb. She was very enthusiastic and we started out at a good pace. However, the city girl found the terrain above timberline to be increasingly difficult as we ascended. We got up to the monitor station, and t...

Ventured 45 minutes south of Reno and had most of the day to explore in the Mt. Rose Wilderness and climb two peaks within it doing a creative loop. One peak rarely climbed (Chocolate) and another frequently so (Rose). Thunderstorms threatened throughout the day. Very clear skies, still a few flowers and magnificent views. A bit of wandering above the Timberline trail. What more could you want. Fireweed is full on. There were a few biting bugs between Cove Creek and the Timberline trail. No problem if you were moving. We had a great time!

It was the last day my vacation week and I wanted a higher elevation hike to stay cool! We were so lucky to find a parking space right in front of the TH! The parking area was overflowed! The Top Spur trail up to the PCT is so root bound and rocky that it shows how much it's being used. Flies (not the black biting ones) annoyed us until we hit the treeline!!...

Took our first trip to Mississippi Head. I have to admit it was a lot harder than I anticipated and we had our 17 yr old who doesn't hike with us much, on this hike as well. We definitely took this one much slower than planned. Ran into a few PortlandHikers throughout the day which is always a treat! Long, taxing day but what a hike!

I wanted to visit Golden Lake, but, I was not close to the trailhead where the hike would be the shortest. I would rather hike than drive, so I decided I would take the popular Green Lakes TH to Green Lakes and over the ridge to Golden Lake. Hoped to escape the city heat, and mostly succeeded! Took an entirely new (to us) route up to Paradise Park from the Kiwanis Camp area below Government Camp, going up the Paradise Park trail and coming back down the Hidden Lake trail. This is a long forested hike with access to many forested lakes. Blow Lake is only a mile from the TH, and Doris Lake is only 2.5 miles from the TH. Most people seemed to visit these lakes. Hot, very dusty hike with very little water sources after Sheep Lake. Great views of Mt. Adams but overall was a bit underwhelmed with this hike as Nelson in his day hiking book gave it 5 stars. Maybe hiking around the Alps a couple weeks ago & then Hurricane Ridge a few days ago has spoiled me a bit.

My wife was helping teach in summer school so I hiked solo today. I was just hoping to meet any PCT hikers and again handout Oreo Cookies. I hiked to the top of South Sister from Devil's Lake TH. It was a first time for me. I got a very late start and had a quiet walk up to the lake below Lewis glacier, where I found a number of other hikers. Clear skies, great views at the summit. It was great to finally do this one, but I was disappointed to not have my husband there to enjoy it with me!

We love this area, and it didn't disappoint! I wanted to see if we could meet some PCT through hikers. We always carry small packs of Oreo Cookies to hand out on the PCT, and it was a good decision to take the whole box! We met about 7 Oregon only hikers and 2 full PCT through hikers. I would have loved to keep hiking but the drive here is close to 2.5 hours...

Primitive camping is allowed on the north shore of Mono Lake, you can walk in from a gate off the cemetary road. We were the only humans around this bleak but beautiful place. A hot day in Portland, but not on the coast. We decided to hike the Oregon Coast trail at Fort Stevens State Park! The parking lot was almost empty, which suited us just fine! We hiked this trail several years ago and somehow remembered it as being fairly level, but it's not completely the case! The first half of the trail is quite gnarly with plenty of roots and rocks and scree. It also climbs up and then drops back down before hitting the more level area we remembered. There are a couple of great views from rock outcroppings, an...
