Another family hike. We hiked south from near McKenzie Pass, connected to PCT and followed it for about 4.5 miles. Initially, the trail goes through forest with a few glimpses of a lava field (jumble of boulders several dozen feet high), then it goes by the two lakes, and after a little while climbs on the lava. Very nice trail from the lakes and above, more...

For some reason, I really like Indian Heaven. But for some reason, I can only seem to get there when it's in a big raincloud. Today, I think it was a combination of our weather, plus what seems to be the perennial fog that just doesn't leave that place. That being said, it was still great. I got to the Sawtooth Trailhead around 10:30—things were pretty crowd...

Same hike as 3 days before, this time I took my mom for her second time in Goat Rocks (1st time this year). Met some frozen backpackers with everything on (as we headed with t-shirts) and they said it was outright miserable a day before - rain, wind and cold! Once we got to Snowgrass Flats, we could see flowers really got a beating from the weather. It also ...

With time before work this morning, I thought it might be fun to see how quickly I could hike up to Devil's Rest. This isn't normally my type of thing, but I had the itch so I went with it. I hit Angel's Rest in 40 minutes and continued up, but unfortunately a wasp flew into my shirt and stung me right below my shoulder blade. This made the rest of the trip ...

Went with my dad to show him Goat Rocks while the summer weather is still here. I heard it was a cloudy day back in Vancouver, but at GR it was 100% sunny despite the forecast. Since my dad doesn't consider camping his hobby, the only option was to hike it in a day. We started at Snowgrass TH, went up trail #96 to the PCT, then on PCT to Packwood "glacier" o...

I joined a Mazamas group for this trip. We started at the Main Eagle TH, and hiked up Eagle creek to Cached Lake, made camp and summited Needlepoint Peak the next day. Fun off trail scrambling through alpine meadows and granite slopes. Stunning views of the Wallowas all around at 9000 feet!

This was the first Hiking trip with my wife so I tried to pick a relatively easy trail for her first time. Unfortunately the last 1/3 of the Gale River Trail had some very steep rocky/boulder sections that my wife so lovingly named "The Stairs from Hell." We also tried to make it over to Mt. Garfield, but the Garfield Ridge Trail contained some really slippe...

WARNING, THIS IS NOT A HIKE.... just to clarify that for those considering. Recall that two weeks later on September 24 a man fell to his death while 'scrambling'. His body has not been recovered and it is hoped that the winter snow and ice will migrate it down to a less hazardous area for recovery next year. re-Posted from CC.com... Why I keep coming back t...

Took my pops on his first backpacking trip ever on an easy jaunt on the old abandoned Cascade Crest Trail over to Bear Lake from the Thomas Lake trailhead. Some huckleberries were around for the first mile or so, but none of the bushes higher up have berries yet, let alone ripe ones. I caught eight cut throat trout out of Bear Lake, including a few impressiv...

This trip was supposed to be a Three Finger Jack loop, but it ended up being an out-and-back to Square Lake. The big problem was the bumble bees. The trail was covered in a white flower which was at the peak of its pollination so the bees were going nuts. Usually they don't bother me, but I had several swarm me, and since I had shorts on and was walking righ...

Next morning went up the use trail (marked with cairns) to the summit of the Matterhorn (9826 ft), then scrambled across the ridges and gendarmes to the summit of Sacajawea Peak (9838 ft), the tallest in Eagle Cap. I enjoyed a wonderful weekend with our large group. We camped out on Lake Stuart and, as Kyle mentioned, a few of us hiked up Aasgard Pass to check out the upper basin. We started our climb a bit late in the day, so I didn't get to see all of the upper alpine lakes like I wanted, but maybe next year. Colchuck Lake is gorgeous, and I'm definitely going to try...

Coming from Portland, the scale and ruggedness of the central Washington cascades are overwhelming the first time you see them. They are jagged and looming and give a sense of grandeur that you don't get anywhere in, say, Mt. Hood National Forest. A planned 2-nighter turned into a day trip. I'm not entirely sure why, but I think I'm just getting hiked out for the year. I still want to make 1,000 miles, though. Drove up Friday night and did some "car camping" (in the car). I did the Walupt lake loop, adding on Cispus Pass and a little wandering. The basin below Cispus is pretty cool, with several casca...

Took our friends from S. Cal. to Paradise Park. It was nice today for the most part, but the Park was really filled with smoke. I saw only 2 or 3 groups camping, lots of dayhikers, and many backpackers heading in and out of Paradise (or heading in and turning out because of smoke?). Still, we saw most of the views and the flowers are near peak, better than o...

Down the normal Larch Mountain trail to Multnomah Falls and the car.

Hiked with my dad and with our dog to Bald Butte after changing our Mt. Hood plan (too much smoke). Hiked from Timberline Lodge to Split Rock in Paradise Park. Besides a couple of snow patches, the trail has melted out. No mosquitoes and almost no biting flies, warm but breezy weather - a perfect day for a hike. Very few people after Zigzag Canyon overlook. It's surprising how much easier this hike became since I hiked it a year ago.

I decided to escape the pea soup clouds of Portland this morning in search of sunshine. Bringing my SLR and 70-200mm lens, I thought it'd be fun to get some close-up shots of Mt. Hood from across the highway on TDH. Lots of people around Mirror Lake, but only a couple once I got past it.
