2012 Trips
The Crags
4 miles of hiking • 750' elevation gain •
Near Pikes Peak in Colorado.
Made time for some hiking while we were on our way to Denver for an overnight IKEA run.So glad we did because this was easy with a huge payoff...The perfect combination for hiking at 6 months pregnant.
I know we had a view of Pikes Peak throughout most of this hike...but I'm not sure which peak it is! Ha.
Stable Mesa
2.5 miles of hiking • 750' elevation gain •
Jemez Mountains, Santa Fe National Forest, New Mexico
We actually didn't take the path to the top that I had planned...never really saw the turn to the left that we were looking for. Instead we ended up a trail that looked like it was for ATV straight up to the top. The trip was a couple of miles shorter than it should have been and we missed a spring that I was desperately looking forward to escaping the heat in. Maybe we'll try to again in a couple of years.
The view at the top of Stable Mesa was very nice, although I think it'd be its best with snow still on the ground.
Domingo Baca Route / Annular Eclipse
6 miles of hiking • 1750' elevation gain •
Albuquerque, NM
First real hike since finding out I'm pregnant. I did Mt. Taylor when I was 4 or 5 weeks but I wasn't feeling any different, then.
So, we thought that we would take this trail up to some point from which we could view the annular eclipse, but quickly realized that the second half of the hike was deep in a canyon with heavy tree cover and no views of the sun at the time the eclipse was going to be taking place. This was a nice, wooded trail with a running stream along most of the path—it reminded me of hiking back east. Anyway we went up until probably a 1/2 mile before the end of the trail, up to about right under where the tramway goes overhead (which means we didn't get to the TWA crash site...not sure if I regret that, though) and decided to head back down to the parking lot just in time to catch the partial eclipse beginning. And we saw some happy naked people enjoying the stream on our way back. The eclipse was amazing.
Piedra Lisa Canyon
2.5 miles of hiking • 1000' elevation gain •
Sandia Mountains, Albuquerque, NM
This was a strange little hike, but fun. Saw a lot of great plant life.
Mount Taylor / Gooseberry Springs Trail
7 miles of hiking • 2250' elevation gain •
Mt. Taylor, NM
A big payoff in lovely views for such an easy hike. We had to walk through thigh-deep snow for the first half mile, which is shaded.
March 24, 2012
White Rock Canyon
1.5 miles of hiking • 1000' elevation gain •
White Rock, NM
We intended to take the Blue Dot Trail or the Red Dot Trail but I'm not even sure that we even found either one. We ended up scrambling down the canyon to the Rio Grande, never found the trail, walked along the river for a while, then made our way back up. It was a very short trip, but more strenuous than I can remember doing for a very long time. We ended up having time to drive the long way home, through Los Alamos and the Jemez Mountains, so that was nice...
Three Gun Spring Trail
8 miles of hiking • 2000' elevation gain •
Sandia Mountains, Albuquerque, New Mexico
Ojito Wilderness
4 miles of hiking • 0' elevation gain •
I don't know how many miles we really hiked. We took a trail to some petroglyphs and from there hiked down through several arroyos.
Ojito Wilderness, New Mexico
Hawk Watch Trail & Beyond...
5.5 miles of hiking • 2250' elevation gain •
Sandia Mountains, New Mexico
Took the Hawk Watch Trail to the end, then continued past the sign and on up to the cliffs.
