30 miles of hiking • 2000' elevation gain •

Been wanting to try this one for awhile. Got dropped off at the trailhead on Newberry Road at 5:30 am and started walking towards the Oregon Zoo. About 5 miles in, I started to notice a pattern...switchback, switchback, switchback, footbridge. That basically sums up the first 25 miles of the hike. Once I got to the Pittock Mansion I was able to get some great views and change in scenery. Going through the Hoyt Arboretum was pretty cool as well.

I tracked the hike with my GPS since I was curious to see what the total elevation gain was from the up and downs. Came in just over 2,000 feet over the course of 30 miles. Definitely a looooong hike. Took me 11 hours walking at a pretty quick pace.

Good gravy, son.

That trail is nice - for about 3 miles or so, then it starts to become a little monotonous. Pittock is a cool spot.

Now I have to up my mileage tomorrow. I was trying to find a place to backpack 30 miles tomorrow night - now I've gotta find a place with at least 40...

Personally, I'm just going to do an easy hike today and then do some naked bike riding!

I know I'm kind of spamming, but if you put the top 10 back in we could have a party at the end of the year for the all the top 10 gain hikers. Or top 20, or add the most gain per mile cat. back too... heh

LMAO. Now my email is blowing up.

I agree about the party Eric. We should have some awesome award ceremony with trophies (maybe Ski trophies with the skis broken off??).

Anyone got any hikes planned for the weekend? Trying to find something to do.

The plan for Sunday is probably silver star in the afternoon, if the "clouds clearing out by the afternoon" part of the forecast holds up. Haven't picked which trailhead. Or grassy knoll/big huck. Or observation peak.

Eric Peterson

Trapper Creek is nice, big loop with that hike up to Observation Peak. Nice...

Justin Wright

Observation Peak does look look nice. Is that backpackable?

Chris

Everything's backpackable :)

I was going to say the full loop isn't very practical right now - but it may be possible.

That loop has gotta be doable by now without cramps or snow shoes...
