2013 Trips
North lake via Kingsley res
12 miles of hiking • 250' elevation gain •
Rather boring hike but was mainly done for the exercise value and fishing anyhow. Would have driven to the trailhead but my car is not designed for off roading so I took pity on it. No fish for me but the weather was outstanding and a walk in the woods beats working any day. Only saw 4 people all day but did see the many remnants of people in the form of littered beer cans on the side of the road. What the heck is wrong w/ people that do this? Does this annoy anyone else or am I being to old and sensitive? On the way out i skewered as many as possible w/ my trekking poles and deposited them in the can at Kingsley. Forgot my camera so the iPhone had to do.

off trail in IHW
3.5 miles of hiking • 500' elevation gain •
Beautiful weather for some off trail w/ my son to a lake in IHW.
wapiki lake indian heaven wilderness
7 miles of hiking • 1500' elevation gain • 1 night
Had to get out of town so did a one nighter with the dog to Wapiki lake.
An easy drive from Hood River. Got to the trail head off 24 at about 9 and encountered a few groups of hikers headed out after doing the lakes loop. Beautiful weather, about ideal for hiking.
Still a few patches of snow hanging on in the shaded areas.
No bugs until I arrived at the lake. Moderate skitters, w/ a few biting flies were paying a visit. I love this lake w/ it's blue/green water color, fish, and rarely do I encounter more than 1 or 2 other campers. Had the peninsula site this trip which was stocked w/ saw-able size wood, always terrific when you arrive and find your house furnished. If I hadn't of had it w/ the skitters, I would have salvaged to replenish the supply a bit for the next guy before I left but Lexi and I were ready to head out...Would anyone miss mosquitoes if they were to suddenly disappear? Do you view them as part of the overall wilderness experience or just a pain in the ass?
Great hike w/ or w/out the bugs.

Soda Peaks lake, Trapper Creek wilderness
4.5 miles of hiking • 750' elevation gain • 1 night
Beautiful weather for a hike w/ one of my kids. Had the lake to ourselves. The fish were jumping and we ended up with 3 nice brown trout. Not a heavily used destination, having said that I still carried out beer bottles and other human litter left behind by dumb inconsiderate people. Great time and a great destination close to home. We're lucky to have such pristine areas to enjoy.
Catherine creek Columbia Gorge
6 miles of hiking • 750' elevation gain •
Beautiful weather, no work, an excellent day for Don an I to get some exercise and explore near by Catherine Creek area. We weren't alone in our reasoning, as exemplified by the huge amount of cars lined up along hwy 14.
It is a beautiful area for sure, I see why it's popular. Interestingly and happily we encountered only a handful of people on the
trails due in part to getting off the trails when we got half way up and making our own way.
