Was going to hike Middle Salmon River trail, but when I got there decided to do something less crowded and continued 1/3 mile to a new Salmon Butte trailhead. I've never done this hike before but read on Portland Hikers that the road to an old trailhead had been decommissioned and blocked just after Salmon River crossing. Making calculation on Kyle's map, th...

So glad to be done with this one. Took the 194 trail north to 158. 158 had several blow downs and the snow started at 3400. Well packed but icy. From the basin around 3400, I ventured off trail to avoid the sidehilling - I wouldn't do this hike for the next several weeks without a good GPS or excellent navigation skills. Routefinding in the several miles of ...

Started down at Wahkeena around 11 am. Made good time up to a point under Devils Rest to cut across some old logging roads to get up to Larch Mountain road. Ran into one of my daughters class mates on the remote logging road, they were doing a 3 sons and a dad Fathers Day hike of some sort. Figured out later that they parked at the yet closed Larch Mountain ...

Headed out around 9am and headed out at the trailhead around 10am. Went up past Carpenter Lake and connected with the PCT. We ended up taking the middle route up (not heartbreak nor the PCT). It was a beautiful, windy climb...but the loose rocks weren't so great for Wrangell. We made it to the top and had BEAUTIFUL views of fog! Gorgeous. We did take a break...

Quick overnight with friends. Swam, caught two bull trout, and hung out by a roaring fire provided by perfectly seasoned wood from the clearcut. A great camping experience with very little backpacking :)

While visiting a few friends in Seattle I had half-day to myself, so I drove out into the Cascades for this short hike. I only went as far as Little Bandera, which is a peak separated by a half-mile ridge from its slightly taller namesake, mostly due to my lack of a traction device and a heavily corniced ridge. The views were great and the crowds were small ...

Up Starvation and down the Defiance trail. The latter is probably steeper - next time I'm going to try going up it and down Starvation. Totally beautiful bluebird day, wanted to stay at Warren Lake sitting in a chair with a book or something. (I'll have to go back there for an overnight.) Very little snow compared to TRs from a week ago - we didn't hit any a...

Hike up to Burnt lake. Super nice day. Snow at 3800ft and deep beyond that. The original plan was to go up to east Zigzag, but the consensus was to turn around shortly after the lake.

Hike was great to start with, Eagle Creek is a gentle climb, We took the Benson trail about 5 miles up Eagle Creek. The Benson Trail is very steep, lots of tree across the trail require lots of climbing over. Some wonderful views of the canon, and then later of the Eagle Creek bowl. After about 2.7 miles we had reach the Benson Plato, coming from the south a...

Been wanting to try this one for awhile. Got dropped off at the trailhead on Newberry Road at 5:30 am and started walking towards the Oregon Zoo. About 5 miles in, I started to notice a pattern...switchback, switchback, switchback, footbridge. That basically sums up the first 25 miles of the hike. Once I got to the Pittock Mansion I was able to get some grea...

I have tried to summit table twice before to get stuck at the boulder field. Third times a charm! I started @ Bonneville Hotsprings and climbed through the mud and muck for about 45 minutes before coming to the meadow and turns for Aldrich Butte. The PCT was gorgeous and dry. Heartbreak Ridge was slick and muddy, which wore me out by the time I got to the to...

Went up late tonight to get a quick hike in. The plan was to do Wildcat, but I ran into drifts on the road 2 miles before the trailhead. A high clearance vehicle would do fine. Outbacks and smaller, if going this week, bring a shovel in case you get high-centered. I didn't have either, so I ended up road walking a good ways. It was supposed to be clear out t...

Saw the TR for this hike on portlandhikers, and had to go check out the wildflowers. They are immaculate, but I left my camera in the car. We didn't quite make it to the summit because we had to get back to town. No worries there - I've been to the top, just wanted to see the flowers in person.

First hike in a long time, thought it was going to be painful, but was a breeze. Good fun. Started out around 9:45 am, took the west trail, climbed 2000ft in the first 1.5 miles. ate lunch on the ridge, returned via the eat trail. Rained all morning, made it a wonderful trip.

They say the third time's the charm. Apparently not. Yet again, Table evades me. I started at one of the CG-2000 trailheads around 1p and made my way up the PCT towards Three Corner Rock. Hit snow patches around 3200', which continued on the east side of the ridge all the way to table. Often it was easier to bushwhack up higher on the ridge, or take 4x4 road...

Balsamroot is at the peak right now. Many other flowers as well. Even though the cars were parked in 4 rows at trailhead (we parked at the shoulder just east because parking was completely crammed) it didn't feel too crowded on the mountain, probably because it's not one trail but three.

A little morning ramble looking for another one of those big mossy scree fields after seeing it on Google Earth. The end of this road trip signified the end of my 3 week vacation in-between jobs (*sad trombone sound*) we were supposed to be headed straight to Portland, but I managed to finagle a short side trip to Little Crater Lake, the PCT is about 1/2 mile from the campground. Started with a warm up on Hamilton on the WA side. No sweat, quickie hike while it's still free. Cruised over to Defiance to hike that trail, did Starvation 2 weeks and I still think Defiance is steeper going up. But I was not fresh as I just did Hamilton. Read about the "northernmost stand of rare cyprus trees" and thought that would be a cool thing to check out. I wasn't too sure what a cyprus tree looked like, but I did know they were the rarest tree in North America, only growing in the Siskiyou Mountains, and therefore assumed they would be very interesting. It turns out they are just glorified Juniper bu...

I headed up north again this week, this time to scout out some options for an upcoming trip. I didn't get out of Portland until 5:30, and then got stuck at the bridge for about a half hour while I waited for the drawbridge to come back down. 504 was covered with yellow flowers, and the drive to MSH was super quiet: the last 20 miles I saw no cars. A near-perfect day for this one . . . Kyle's TR says it all. I used snowshoes to about 6000' but they weren't necessary, and if I could do it again I'd leave them at home. Glissading conditions were great and according to the gps, I got up to 15mph! What a blast.
