Hiked around Coldwater Lake CCW, the ridge part first because the other trailhead @ boat launch was gated. Saw 3 groups going around the lake, and several more hiking out and back. It was really warm and sunny there, almost felt like summer. Lots of great views; the narrow & long Coldwater Lake almost looks like big river. Not much fall color near the trail because vegetation is mostly alder (the best was 2.5 mile section from boat launch to the falls, with a good mix of maples) but the cliffs on Minnie Peak and in upper Coldwater canyon had a lot of vivid orange.

Well, technically it's restricted hiking area, meaning off-trail hiking is not permitted. But there's 2 side trails at the far end of the loop that go out of restricted area. One of them goes to Coldwater Peak - the best summit to see St Helens crater from. The other trail goes behind Minnie Peak (those cliffs w/orange maples on them) and then I heard it's easy cross-country scramble to the summit.
Oh, that makes sense. Coldwater Peak is on my to-do list.
Where'd all the snow go?! :-)
Karl - the snow is forecasted to be back there tomorrow :-/ It was nice surprise to have summer for a day.

Cool photos. I've never hiked this area. I think I need a tour guide perhaps. Aren't there alot of ridges and peaks you can do near here?
