19.5 miles of hiking • 4750' elevation gain •

Did a solo loop up Hunchback Mountain to Devil's Peak, then back down the Kinzel Lake and Salmon River trails. The rhododendrons were nearly at peak, the beargrass was busting out on the descent side, the trails were deserted! Went 16.5 miles without seeing another person on the trail. (Did see a few at both the lookout and the lake.) Highly recommended trip, if you ever "just need a long walk in the woods!" Not a lot of sweeping vistas, to be sure. It really is a walk in the woods. :-)

Hi Karl,

I am curious, Did you kick off this hike from the Zig Zag Ranger station? I really want to do this exact loop. Where was your start point? I was looking at a Mt Hood Wilderness Map and it doesnt show that it is a loop. Any help would be great. Ps. Great pictures!!!

Hey Randy, no, I started at the Salmon River trailhead, but in retrospect I think the wiser choice would be the Green Canyon campground. (Assuming there's parking available; I didn't really look!) From there, take the Green Canyon Way Trail (#793A) up to the Hunchback Trail (#793). See the "Resource" link above for a much fuller trip report on PortlandHikers.org, and here - http://gpsfly.org/g/2526 - is a GPS track. Enjoy! :-)
