New Year's Eve backpack
5 miles of hiking • 1250' elevation gain • 1 night
New Year's backpack to watch the fireworks at Timberline Lodge. This bookmarked our year out since we camped at the same spot New Year's Eve 2017.
It was 12 degrees and cold, but we had two of our adult children with us as well as our daughter's ex and were able to scrape enough gear together for five so it was a deliriously great night!
Last year I had trouble getting the night onto the 2017 year, so I'm using Dec. 30 in hopes it goes on 2018's.
Happy New Year!

Our original plan was to catch some stars at Trillium Lake, but a traffic fatality by Rhododendron changed our plans. Since we were night hiking, we chose the route from the closed bridge to the Sandy crossing on the Ramona Falls trail and spent the night off the trail. Micro spikes would have helped, but we left them in the car. This Is a perfect reason to have maps. We were able to figure out Plan B with them.
